Barry Byrne, MD, a professor of molecular genetics and director of the UF Powell Gene Therapy Center, has been at the forefront of cutting-edge therapies to treat Pompe disease, a heartbreaking muscular disorder that strikes young children. In fact, his role in helping get an experimental drug in the hands of patients was highlighted in the feature film “Extraordinary Measures.” Pompe Disease has been the focus of a research program at UF for more than 10 years and is now part of expanded efforts in neuromuscular disease research.
